Case Study: Major Infrastructure Operator, South Australia

The organisation operates a large and complex transport precinct, supporting passenger movements, commercial operations, critical infrastructure and property-related activity. With an asset portfolio spanning physical infrastructure, technology systems, operational assets and commercial property, asset integrity plays a critical role in maintaining safety, reliability, continuity and long-term performance across a high-profile operating environment.

Industry

Infrastructure, transport and aviation.

Project Overview

Following an internal audit and review of asset management practices, the organisation engaged Methuen Consulting to assess the maturity of its Asset Management System against ISO 55001. Certification was not the immediate objective. The priority was to understand the organisation’s current level of capability, identify practical improvement opportunities and establish a structured pathway towards better practice. Methuen Consulting facilitated a comprehensive maturity assessment with senior leaders from across the organisation, then developed a prioritised Asset Management Improvement Program.

The program focused on strengthening governance, planning, information management and decision-making, while creating stronger alignment between asset management activity, organisational objectives and long-term business outcomes.

The Challenge

The organisation had many asset management activities underway across the business, but practices were fragmented and inconsistently documented. Without an overarching management system framework, it was difficult to achieve clear visibility, accountability and assurance across asset management activities. Resource constraints, competing priorities and limited funding also shaped what could realistically be achieved. Culturally, asset management was often viewed as a functional responsibility, rather than an enterprise-wide business discipline with direct influence on risk, performance, investment and long-term value.

The organisation needed a practical improvement roadmap that balanced strategic objectives with available resources, while building greater ownership and accountability for long-term asset management outcomes across the business.

Our Role

Methuen Consulting acted as advisor, facilitator and delivery partner throughout the engagement.

Using a structured methodology aligned with ISO 55001, we conducted an Asset Management Maturity Assessment, facilitated cross-functional workshops with more than 20 senior leaders, identified capability gaps and established improvement priorities. We then developed the core governance and planning documentation needed to support a more mature asset management approach. Methuen provided program leadership, technical expertise and implementation guidance throughout, while enabling the business to retain ownership of organisational change.

The result was a clear, practical roadmap for aligning asset management systems and practices with ISO 55001 principles and industry best practice.

Outcomes and Impact

The organisation now has a clear baseline for improvement and an evidence-based roadmap for strengthening its asset management practices. The program improved executive awareness, strengthened governance and created closer alignment between asset management activity and business objectives. It also gave leaders a clearer view of priority actions, capability requirements and the practical steps needed to build maturity over time.

Since the engagement, the organisation has progressed asset criticality assessments, commenced the development of multiple Asset Management Plans, and expanded internal capability through dedicated asset and reliability-focused roles. Most importantly, the organisation now has a structured and prioritised pathway for continual improvement, supporting better decision-making, improved risk management and more effective lifecycle management of critical assets across a complex operating environment.

Methuen Consulting’s workshops drew input form across our organisation and gave us a clear view of our maturity, improvement opportunities and next steps. Their team has been clear, responsive, flexible and collaborative, and we have been very pleased with their work. We plan to continue collaborating with Methuen into the future.
